Saturn’s ring composition revealed

A much better image can be had by clicking on the picture above.

Finally, after how many centuries? scientists have determined the exact composition of the rings of Saturn. The picture shows the planet at its equinox; the rings are lit by the sun edge-on which allows us to answer the age-old question: What are they made of? The Cassini spacecraft conducted extensive spectral analysis and it comes down to three elements: Outermost ring—milk chocolate; Middle ring—latté; and innermost ring—horse manure. The planet itself appears to consist of peaches and cream with blueberries on top.

So, as one progresses outward, the tastiness of the planets decreases from the chocolatey goodness of the Mars (bar) to the hidden tang (?) of horsepoop candy cream. Evidently.

In horse news, we've been seeing good ol' King and Pelton hanging about.

Oh good! Are King and Pelton maintaining their weight, or are they dropping off? They're 60 years old collectively, after all.

Did anyone notice the four bright moons on the enlarged picture? I know, I know, they are probably frozen lumps of vanilla ice cream, but just in case they are not, I get dibs on naming them.

Pat: Suggested names for two of your ice cream moons: Ben & Jerry.
