I can just imagine the experiments you are doing with your cat right now. Oh dear, I do hope you will survive the scratches and bite marks...what have I done?
It didn't work. After about fifty tries the jam finally dried, and the cat was so tired he just let it stick him to the rug. Maybe tomorrow I'll bring in a garden hose and try to unstick him. If that doesn't work, well, we were tired of that old rug anyway. By the way, he never scratched me once.
Finally, a practical solution to so many problems! Thanks to Susan for the lead.

He was probably in complete shock at receiving so much lavish attention. That's a relief. Enjoy your new rug.
