Three months ago NASA launched an observatory to look at the sun. The Solar Dynamics Observatory got its money’s worth recently with this huge eruption putting on a show unlike any seen in a very long time. Billions of tons of mass were blown away in this eruption (fortunately not aimed at earth). You can watch a time-lapse video on YouTube
